How to use the verb “want”



 The verb "want"  is normally used when asking for something.

Example

Ben: What do you want from the shop?

Anne: I want an ice cream, please.

Examples of how to use "want" in a sentence

Ben: What do you want for your birthday?

Anne: I want a new car, please.

Anne: What animal do you want?

Ben: I want a dog.



Examples of a negative way to use “want” in a sentence

Ben: What don't you want for your birthday?

Anne: I want a new washing machine.

Anne: What animal don't do you want?

Ben: I don't want a Guinea pig.






No, we use “want” with “To” followed by an infinitive.


Example with Affirmative sentences

I want to be a pop star.

You want to read a book.

He wants to have a brother.

She wants to ride a bike.

The dog ---- It wants to eat the bone.

We want to go to the concert next weekend.

They want to pass their English exam.




Example with Negative sentences

I don´t want to be a pop star.

You don´t want to read a book.

He doesn´t want to have a brother.

She doesn´t want to ride a bike.

The dog ---- It doesn´t want to eat the bone.

We don´t want to go to the concert next weekend.

They don´t want to pass their English exam.
